Serra de Tramuntana (Mallorca) is a mountain chain stretching along the entire west coast of the island, from Cape Formentor to Cape Sa-Mola (total length - more than 90 km).
Serra de Tramuntana (Sierra de Tramuntana) is one of the objects of UNESCO's cultural heritage. What did these mountains in Mallorca deserve such a high status? Of course, the landscape value of this area, but - not only: historic, ethnic and cultural values also played a significant role.
Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca is a perfect example of how a person, if desired, can not spoil the natural landscape, but change it by his influence for the better. That's why Serra de Tramuntana and fell into the category of "Cultural Landscape".
Christians who replaced the Moors did not destroy the pre-existing traditions of farming, but brought their own, and today thanks to this mixture we can admire the unique stone terraces for the cultivation of olives, irrigation systems and sewerage, the houses of coal miners.
At the very top you can see "snow houses". Yes, there are snow on the mountain peaks of the island, and cases de neu are special stone buildings used for its storage. Snow in the spring was collected, rammed and cut with special saws on blocks, and then transported to customers. All the work was done at night, so that the ice did not melt. Taking into account the temperature on the island's territory, the business of "producing" and selling ice was very profitable as long as the fridges did not enter into use.

Excursions
Among visitors to the island, walking tours of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains are very interesting. The most popular are excursions to the gorges of Torrent de Peiras and Binirach. On the second place in attendance - excursions to the mountain peaks (Massanea, Tamir, etc.).
