Church of Saint Eulalia

One of the "business cards" of the capital of Mallorca is the church of Saint Eulalia, located on the square with the same name, next to the City Hall.

The Church of Saint Eulalia is the oldest Christian church in Mallorca.

The Church of Saint Eulalia is the oldest church of the Balearic Islands . Its construction began in 1229 - immediately after the capture of Majorca by the Aragoneski troops. The church was erected on the site of the old mosque, and according to other legends - on the basis of an even more ancient Christian church (however, it is also possible that the mosque was built on the site of the paleochristian church, and itself served as the basis for the church). Construction was completed in record time for those submissions - in just 25 years. It is named after Saint Eulalia, who was executed at the age of 13 by non-believers for her adherence to Christianity. She is one of the most revered saints in Spain. It is located on the square of the same name. In 1276, Jaime II was crowned in the temple.

The church was also rebuilt many times, its appearance was changed, the facade was last redone in 1893, it belongs to the style of the Gothic Revival. The author of the project of the facade is the architect Juan Sureda I Veri. The church has three naves, the largest of which is located in the center. Outside it is decorated with gargoyles, inside the decoration is very strict, really gothic. The altar of the church is made in baroque style by the Dominican monk Alberto de Burgundy.

From the inside, the church is decorated with paintings of the XV century. There is also a tradition that the image of Jesus is inside, which the conqueror of Majorca Jaime I considered his talisman and never parted with him.
