The famous train is one of the few cases when the century-old monument of technology can not only be seen and touched, but also set off on an unforgettable journey. The train looks very unusual for a modern man, it is made of wood and steel, brass. It was renewed and renovated many times, but it is still the same train it was many years ago - authentic and historical.

History of the train

Tren de Soller was born on the idea of Jeronimo Estadés, a merchant from the Soller Valley. In the valley, despite the fact that the land yielded a good harvest, most of the inhabitants were very poor, because there was no way to transport their produce to the south. The pedestrian crossing through the Tramuntana Mountains lasted at least two days and was a very dangerous journey with a caravan of loaded donkeys. The merchant originally planned to go to the city of Palma from the north, but although he was the richest resident of Soller, the project was costly and he simply did not have enough of his capabilities.

Hope Estadessa was revived by Juan Morell, who argued that it is much cheaper to pave the way through the mountain range, creating a series of tunnels that will lead directly to Palma. This route interested the buyers of the products of the famous Sollier vineyards. Since 1904, work began on the construction of the road. This was an extraordinary feat of technology, the project was crowned with success. Eight years later, on April 16, 1912, there was a solemn opening in Mallorca of a train to Sóller, Geronimo Estadés. The ceremony was attended by local industrialist Pedro Garau Canellas and Spanish Prime Minister Antonio Maura. This was the beginning of a new era, a huge event, and the headlines of all the newspapers started talking about Mallorca.

Traveling by train

A trip on the inside of the island is a real journey back in time. This is a huge open-air museum, because from the time when the entire economy of Mallorca moved to the coast, tiny villages were abandoned and most of the neighborhoods and fields remained virtually unchanged for decades.

The train passes slowly, sometimes it slows down considerably. The entire journey is 27 km and takes about an hour. The route leads through the mountains, through long tunnels with a total length of almost three kilometers. The locomotive was specially imported from England.
