Among the largest cities in Sweden is Gothenburg , famous for its many attractions . One of the most significant is the Botanical Garden.

A bit of history

The botanical garden in Gothenburg was defeated in 1910 by the order of the municipal authorities for the donations of local residents. Its main feature is not imitation of climatic zones, but gardening in all its manifestations. The opening of the garden for the general public took place in 1923, during the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of Gothenburg. Until 2001, the Botanical Garden of Gothenburg was administered by the municipality, after it was transferred to the Vestra region.

An invaluable contribution to the creation and development of the Gothenburg garden was introduced by the famous botanist Karl Scottsberg. He repeatedly went on exploratory trips outside of Sweden to bring rare and endangered plants.

Gothenburg garden today

In 2003, the Botanical Garden of Gothenburg was awarded the title "Sweden's Most Beautiful Garden". Employees of the park received government and international awards. Today the Gothenburg garden is considered one of the main attractions of the state. Every year more than half a million people visit it.

The territory occupied by the Botanical Gardens in Gothenburg is 175 hectares. Some of them are occupied by protected areas, including arboretum. The garden area, built up by huge greenhouses, is 40 hectares. Here grows about 16 thousand different plant species. A special place is given to onion and alpine plants, to trees that occur in temperate latitudes.

You can reach the place by public transport . The stop Göteborg Botaniska Trädgården is located a couple of hundred meters from the garden. Trams Nos. 1, 6, 8, 11 arrive here. Taxis and car rental services are also available.
