The Churches of Luxembourg

It is impossible to make a complete and correct image of any country or city without visiting local attractions , including churches. After all, here you will come across a centuries-old history, seasoned with exquisite architecture and grandeur of interior decoration. That is why the churches of Luxembourg are a must for any tourist who is preparing to visit this country and its capital .

Church of St. Michael

It is the oldest church in Luxembourg. Its history began in 987, when Count Siegfried ordered to build on the place where the shrine is now located, the palace chapel. The chapel was repeatedly destroyed and restored. Its final form it acquired under Louis XIV in 1688. It is believed that during the French Revolution, it was not destroyed, because the Holy Headpiece was like a symbol of the revolution.

What we see now has little to do with the very first chapel. From her, only the portal remained. The modern building is a striking example of baroque architecture with elements of the Romanesque style.

Church of Saints Peter and Paul

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is the only Russian Orthodox church in Luxembourg. It is believed that the first Russian immigrants arrived in Luxembourg from Bulgaria and Turkey. In 1928 they founded an Orthodox parish in a new place, which is located in the building of the barracks. The site for the construction of the Orthodox church was received by parishioners only in the late 1970s, and the first stone was laid in 1979. Archpriest Sergiy Pukh gave many personal funds for the construction of the church.

For modern tourists, this church is remarkable not only for its history, but also for the unique frescos of the work of Cyprian from Jordanville.

Orthodox church of the Holy Trinity

Another famous church in Luxembourg is the Church of the Holy Trinity. It is located on the territory of the castle, built in the IX century. The church was erected in 1248. Inside this building one can see the graves of the Counts of Vianden. In addition, a huge tomb of marble and a gilded altar make a strong impression on the visitors of the church.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg

This cathedral cathedral of Notre Dame was built in 1621 and was originally a Jesuit church. The architect responsible for building the building, J. du Blok, managed to combine in the building elements of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. In the XVIII century the cathedral was given the image of the Mother of God. Now it is located in the southern part of the temple. In addition to it, there are many sculptures in the cathedral, the tomb of the Luxembourg dukes and the tomb of John the Blind, the baize of Bohemia.

Church of St. Johan

The history of this building dates back to 1309. This is evidenced by documentary sources, in which a plot of land was approved for the construction of the church. The church acquired its modern appearance only in 1705. Among other things, this shrine is also remarkable for the fact that there is an organ of 1710 there.

Luxembourg is a country rich in sights, so we also recommend visiting the famous squares of Guillaume II and Clerfontaine , the city hall , the popular palace of the Grand Dukes and one of the most interesting museums in Luxembourg - the museum of urban transport .
