The extended shape of the head in the newborn

Simultaneously with the appearance of the baby, new parents have many doubts and worries, because you want to be sure that the child is absolutely healthy. One of the frequently asked questions of moms and dads is why the newborn has an extended head. In order not to prolong anxiety, we note at once that this is a variant of the norm. The head of the newly born baby can be round, flattened, ovoid and elongated - within one month or even several days the shape changes and the head acquires the expected appearance. The extended shape of the head in newborns is the usual consequence of natural childbirth, in babies that have appeared by cesarean section, the shape of the head is even.

Why does crumb have an elongated shape of the skull?

Nature has made sure that the child's path through the birth canal is as light as possible so that the baby can adjust to the pelvic bones of the mother and without birth injuries and complications. In contrast to the facial bones, which are firmly connected, the bones of the cranial part of the head are characterized by mobility - fibrous membranes are located between them. Due to these membranes from the connective tissue and fontanels on the crown and occiput, the skull bones can be displaced relative to each other. The extended shape of the child's head indicates that the configuration has changed during childbirth and has adapted to the conditions that it faced in this difficult process.

The form when the oblong occiput is observed in a newborn is called dolichocephalic. This option usually occurs in the case when the nape passes first through the birth canal, and the face is unfolded to the back of the mother. In the case of labor without complications, the elongated skull of the newborn does not negatively affect the development of the child and should not be cause for concern.
