The Old Town of Mostar

The old town of Mostar is one of the major parts of the city of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina , attracting tourists with its historical significance. The population is more than 100 000 people, this is one of the important tourist centers of the country.

The Old Town of Mostar

The history of the city goes back to the 1520s. It was this period that marked the beginning of its emergence. And in 1566, during the reign of the Ottoman Empire, the Turks built an important strategic object on the Neretva river, the Mostar bridge of the same name. Within a few years, around the bridge, a city grew up, whose main purpose was to protect the object. Today, this main pride and landmark of a city of 20 m high and 28 m long is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Despite the fact that it was almost completely destroyed during the Bosnian War in 1992 - 1995, the bridge was completely restored in 2004.

In general, the city attracts tourists with ancient bridges, architecture in mixed styles and a calm atmosphere of the Middle Ages with narrow narrow streets lined with paving stones (in Serbian sounds like kaldrm). For tourists here there are many hotels for every taste and wallet, as well as restaurants and cafes where you can try national cuisine.

What to see in the city?

Bridges

In addition to the old bridge, the city has many interesting old bridges of different architecture. For example, Curve bridge . It is very similar to the old Mostar bridge, but smaller in size. And unlike the first, it was built in the 16th century, and since then it's worth it. Small damages were discovered in 2000 as a result of the floods, but already in 2001 the World Organization for Unesco undertook measures for reconstruction. An interesting feature of this bridge is the arch in the form of an ideal semicircle with a radius of about 4 m. The architect, unfortunately, is unknown.

And one of the youngest bridges, built in 1916, is called "Tsarinsky Bridge" and is automobile.

Parks

Zrinjevac Park deserves special attention, if only because there is a monument to Bruce Lee, which is very unusual. Local people say that once the residents of the city raised funds and decided to install a monument. There were many options, but there was only enough money for one object. After a little reflection, the townspeople abandoned the idea of a monument dedicated to a national hero or poet, because in addition to them, no one will know him. But Bruce Lee is known all over the world.

The Plaza of Spain is next to the park. From history it is known that it was here that several heroes died during the Civil War. A special attention is drawn to a very unusual, beautiful building, made in neo-Mauritanian style. This is Gymnasium Mostar. If you visited the old town of Mostar, you simply have to see this architectural art with your own eyes.

The old market town of Mostar will meet you with narrow streets and workshops in combination with hotels and small cafes that convey the charm of the local color. It is located in the center of the city and deserves an indispensable visit. This place was founded in the middle of the 16th century and was a kind of business center of the city, where more than 500 different craft workshops were located and functioned. Here you can buy souvenirs for yourself and your family.

Religious and cultural heritage of the city

The Mahmed-Pasha Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques. The interior of the building is very modest, there is a small courtyard. And it is famous for the fact that tourists can climb the minaret, from where stunning views of the city come off.

The Church of St. Peter and Paul is the main Catholic church, which every day gathers a huge number of parishioners for the morning prayer. The church is famous for its huge size, the absence of fanciful architectural forms and a huge concrete bell tower with a height of 107 meters.

The city has museums and many beautiful mosques and Catholic churches. Fans of history and culture can visit the house-museum of Muslibegovitsa , where you can get acquainted with the way of life and traditions of Turkish families of the 19th century.

How to get there?

Mostar has its own international airport , so from Moscow you can fly to the city by direct flight if it is available (flights fly irregularly). In principle, this old city is a link in the chain of travel, and not the main goal. Therefore, you can choose another option - to fly from Moscow by direct flight to the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the city of Sarajevo. And after seeing its sights, go by bus or car to the old town of Mostar . The distance will be about 120 km.
