The river Trebizhat


The river Trebizhat flows in the south-west of Bosnia and Herzegovina , being the second largest river in the country. Its length is about 51 km, width depending on the relief varies from 4 to 20 meters. It flows into the Neretva river . The river Trebizhat is known for its unusual and beautiful waterfalls. It is of interest to tourists and pilgrims traveling to the nearby Medjugorje .

Due to this feature, in addition to its main name, the river has eight more names: Vrlika, Tikhalina, Mlade, Tsulusha, Ritsina, Brina, Suvaia, Matica, Trebizhat. The river flows through ecologically clean regions of the country, therefore its waters are favorable for reproduction of a large number of species of fish and river microorganisms. At present, the preservation of a unique coastal ecosystem is a state program. For lovers of active recreation on the river Trebizhat, international competitions on canoeing and kayaking are held, and along the coast tourist hiking trails are laid.

Waterfalls on the river Trebizhat

The picturesque Kravice waterfall forms several branches of the Trebijan river, flowing through the forest, and then falling into the lake from a height of 27-28 meters. This action takes place on an area 150 meters wide. The beauty of Kravice inspires poets for romantic epithets: some compare it to a white horse in a jump, others compare it with a fan opened over a cliff. The stunning panorama of the waterfall made an indelible impression on the officials who declared the territory around the waterfall a nature reserve. A lake with crystal clear turquoise waters, in which the river brings down its waters, is available for swimming in the summer season and is an excellent alternative to the Plitvice lakes in Croatia. Near the lake there are several sandy beaches, cafes and restaurants, an observation deck. In addition to Kravice, on the river Trebizhat there is another waterfall - Kochusha, which is second to the first in height but more full-bodied. In its vicinity, one can still see old water mills used in old times for peasant needs.

How to get there?

The nearest large city to the river Trebizhat - Mostar . Kochuša Waterfall is located 3 km north-west of the city of Ljubuszki . The Kravice falls lies downstream, near the village of Studenak. To get the most comfortable on a personal or rented car. Parking by the lakes is free.
