Cathedral of Mother Mary

In the city of Mostar ( Bosnia and Herzegovina ) is the Cathedral of Mary Mother, which is one and four Catholic cathedrals operating in a relatively young state, finally defended its independence in 1995, together with the end of the bloody Bosnian war.

Diocese Mostar-Dusno

The cathedral of Mary the Mother belongs to the diocese of Mostar-Duvno, which has an ancient history. So, the diocese of Dovno was formed practically with the advent of Christianity in the territory of the country, and it was the distant sixth century. The diocese existed until 1663, when after the arrival of the Turks and the planting of Islam on the local lands, it was liquidated.

The re-Catholic Diocese Mostar-Duwno was formed only in 1881, after the local lands were transferred to the power of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

It is noteworthy that in the following years more than 50% of Catholics from the total population lived on local lands. Unlike other dioceses, where there were fewer Catholics.

It is necessary to recognize that the Bosnian war led to outflow of the population from these lands, and therefore the number of Catholics was constantly decreasing.

History of construction of the Cathedral

The cathedral of Mother Mary is relatively young religious building, if you compare it with other similar structures in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country with an ancient history. So, it was built only in 1980. Local Catholics have been waiting for this epoch-making event for more than a hundred years!

Beginning in 1992, the Bosnian war, which lasted until 1995, caused the destruction of many interesting, historical and religious buildings. Suffered from active fighting and the Cathedral of Mary the Mother.

After the war, large-scale reconstruction works were carried out. The original appearance of the building was significantly changed. By the way, thanks to such a forced reconstruction in the tower, which stands apart from the general structure, the bell tower was built.

Also, during the restoration work in the cathedral, an organ was installed. Thanks to this, the Cathedral of Mother Mary became not only one of the main religious centers of the city of Mostar, but also a cultural landmark. You can listen to the unsurpassed sound of the organ every evening.
