The State Museum of Liechtenstein

Liechtensteinisches Landesmuseum , or the State Museum of Liechtenstein is a museum dedicated to the history, geography and nature of this small state. It consists of 3 buildings, two of which are ancient, and one more - modern. The museum has a branch located in an old wooden house in the community of Schellenberg. Another attraction of Liechtenstein - the Postage Stamps Museum , also located in Vaduz, belongs to the State Museum.

A bit of history

The National Museum of Liechtenstein was created on the initiative of Prince Johann II, who ruled the country from 1858 to 1929. It was the collection of weapons, ceramics, paintings, antiques that belonged to the princes of Liechtenstein, and served as the basis for the museum collection. At first the museum was located in the castle of Vaduz . In 1901, the Historical Society was created, in charge of which was the "economy" of the museum, and the task of which was to preserve and replenish museum funds. In 1905, Vaduz Castle became the residence of the princes of Liechtenstein, and the museum moved to the Government building, and in 1926 the first exposition was opened.

In 1929, the museum again returned to the castle, where it is located until 1938, in which the exhibits "part" through several buildings of the city. In 1972, he again opens in a separate building - in the former tavern "At the Eagle." In the same year, the "Foundation of the State Museum of Liechtenstein" was established. However, in 1992 the museum was temporarily closed again - the construction work carried out in the neighboring building caused serious damage to the building of the former tavern. In the period from 1992 to 1994, a part of the collection was taken by the branch of the museum - a wooden house in the commune of Schellenberg.

Between 1999 and 2003, the buildings where the museum is located now also had to survive the restoration; at the same time the museum acquired a new building. In November 2003 the museum opened its doors to visitors.
