Red House

In one of the smallest countries , Liechtenstein , of course, has its own small capital, Vaduz, proportionally modest in size, whose number barely exceeded 5,000. In the street of Prince Franz Josef, one building, called the Red House of Vaduz, stands out from the general style of the city. By the way, the street is named after the previous ruler.

Initially, the house was the property of the Swiss monastery of St. John, around which the monks grew grapes and made wine. The first mention of the house belongs to the chronicle of 1338. In the era of the Reformation of the Church, the Order of the Friars disposed of its property and in 1525 the house was sold to the Weistlis family. A little later, Johann Reinberger became the new owner of the Red House in Liechtenstein. His family still owns a local landmark. One of the well-known descendants - Egon Rheinberger, painter, sculptor, architect - at the beginning of the 20th century conducted a serious reconstruction in the house, so that the appearance of the house was changed somewhat, and we see it exactly like this.

What to see?

The house is called red, because it is the true color of a brick apartment house, which is a classic medieval structure with a stepped roof and ledges of pointed form. He has a master's annex and a tall, beautiful tower that can be seen from anywhere in Vaduz. It is the oldest and most beautiful house in the city, the last of its kind. The red house is built in three floors, the tower rises above its roof for about another three. The tower was built to press the grapes, inside it is installed a huge large oak millstone weighing several tons - the torch. To manage it, you need to climb the spiral staircase to the top of the tower to the levers.

Residents of Liechtenstein respect and cherish their traditions , and also love to celebrate all holidays brightly and cheerfully, so if you are lucky enough to get to one of such celebrations, do not be surprised that you will be treated to a delicious local wine and freshly squeezed juice from local varieties of grapes.

Currently, the owners of the house continue the traditions of winemakers, they own the largest vineyard in Vaduz, broken just opposite the Red House of Liechtenstein. The grape brush is depicted on the coat of arms of Vaduz, since the Principality of Liechtenstein is a producer of quality wine.
