Amblyopia in adults - treatment

Amblyopia is a fairly common phenomenon. This disease is characterized by severe visual impairment due to the absolute incapacity of one of the eyes. At the same time, there are no structural changes in it.

Amblyopia of the eye

The essence of this disease is that one eye becomes the leader and the brain perceives only that visual information that comes through it. As a consequence, a persistent impairment of binocular vision occurs. This means that a person is unable to estimate the volume of what he sees, and the depth, and also correctly perceive the location of objects in space.

Amblyopia affects your well-being in a high degree. Because of the excessive load on one eye and its overstrain, the patient with the disease under consideration suffers from frequent aching headaches, uncomfortable sensations in the eyelids (stinging, burning).

Refractive amblyopia

This type of disease develops as a result of ametropia, which occurs with incorrect (irregular or untimely) wearing glasses. Subsequently, the fundus undergoes modifications, leading to a decrease in the function of one of the eyes.

Obscuration amblyopia

This type of disease is the most difficult in therapeutic practice, because amblyopia leads to an inborn defect in the development of one of the visual analyzers. Thus, the disease can manifest itself at any age and progress quickly enough.

Amblyopia - features of treatment in adults

Unfortunately, in adulthood this disease is rarely cured due to irreversible changes in vision.

The standard therapy scheme is to eliminate all possible diseases that could lead to amblyopia ( cataracts , lens opacity, strabismus , etc.) and impairment of the functions of one eye. After this, occlusion of the dominant visual analyzer - the leading eye is artificially exposed to a decrease in the ability to perceive visual information.

Simultaneously with these procedures, the amblyopic eye is stimulated with light flashes that act as an external stimulus. This is necessary to restore the balance of parallel and equal perception by visual analyzers of information, as well as an even distribution of the load between them.

If the complex of medical measures is effective, then laser vision correction is performed later.
