What is Changri Gompa?

To begin with, Changri-gompa (Cheri Goemba) is a Buddhist monastery built in the territory of Bhutan in 1620 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Shabdrung himself lived here for three years in strictness and more than once visited in the future. The full name of the monastery is Changri Dordenen or otherwise the monastery of Cheri.

Today the temple is the main building for hermits and the school of instruction for the southern branch of Drukpa Kagyu (the first monastic order in Bhutan), as well as an important unit of Bhutan's Kagyu school. The monastery of Changri Gompa is erected on the very top of a steep hill, the road to it is complex and long. It is believed that this holy place, according to religious traditions, was once again visited by great religious founders and figures.

How to get to Changri Gompa?

Ancient monastery is located 15 kilometers from the capital of Bhutan Thimphu , in the north of the same name valley. You can get here only with an official excursion, accompanied by a licensed guide. Ascent to the monastery is only on foot, so take comfortable shoes with you.
