Lhunze Dzong

The state of Bhutan is an amazing country and little known for a greater mass of tourists. In Bhutan, there are still restrictions on independent movement around the country. Therefore, when planning your tourist itinerary with a guide, be sure to include in it an acquaintance with Lhunze-dzong.

What is interesting about the Lhunze Dzong?

It is believed that the first ancient roots of the royal dynasty originated in the Lhunze-Dzong, since the first name of the fortress was "Courto". According to the level of cultural development, dzong is referred to central Bhutan, despite its eastern geography, thanks to the established business relations with these lands, primarily with Mongar .

The location of the fortress-monastery was chosen by the great ancient teacher of the school of Nyingma not by chance: the remote ridge is ideal for meditation. For 500 years his followers have continued the traditions laid down by the founder of the school.

The Lhunze Dzong consists of five temples, three of which are located near the central tower and are dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, the Indian teacher of Buddhist tantra, who made a special contribution to the development of Tibetan Buddhism. The other two temples are the temple of Gonkhang dedicated to the deity of Mahakala, and the temple of Amitayusu, dedicated to the Buddha of Infinite Life. On the first floor of the monastery there is a room dedicated to Avalokiteshvara (infinite compassion of all buddhas).

Constantly in the Dzong live about a hundred monks, in the fortress for their general meeting a special assembly hall - Kunre - was built. Also note that in the architecture of the Dzong there are traces of severe damage caused by the 2009 earthquake with a force of 6.2 on the Richter scale.
