Jigme Dorji National Park


The Jigme Dorji National Park is the largest conservation area in Bhutan . The park was created in 1974 and named after the third king of the country, who died 2 years before the opening, in 1972. The national park is located on the territory of the Dzongkhas Gus, Thimphu , Punakha and Paro . The park is located at altitudes from 1400 to 7000 above sea level, thus capturing three different climatic zones. It occupies 4329 square meters. km.

The main peaks of the national park are Jomolhary (on it, according to legend, there lives a thunder dragon), Jichu Drake and Tsherimang. In the park is the largest geothermal activity center in Bhutan. Here there are people (about 6,500 people) who are engaged in agriculture.

What is interesting about the park?

The national park is unique in that here the habitats of the Bengal tiger and the snow leopard (snow leopard) coincide. In addition to these animals, the park is inhabited by a small (red) panda, baribal, Himalayan bear, musk deer, musk deer, weasel, blue sheep, pika, barking deer, and also takin, which is one of the symbols of the country. In total, the park hosts 36 different species of mammals. The reserve is home to more than 320 species of birds, including bluebird, black-necked crane, blue magpie, white-capped redstart, nutcracker, etc.

The plant world of the reserve is also rich. Here grow more than 300 plant species: several varieties of orchids, edelweiss, rhododendron, gentian, grits, diapensia, saussure, violets and two more symbols of the kingdom: cypress and a unique flower - blue poppy (mekonopsis). This is the only place in Bhutan where all the symbols of the country "live" together.

The Jigme Georgie National Park is very popular with fans of tracking. The most famous are Loop Trek routes (this is a circular route around Jomolhari) and Snowman Trek, which is one of the most complicated in the world. It passes through 6 peaks and takes 25 days; This route is suitable only for physically developed and experienced travelers.

How to get to the park?

The park is located 44 km from Punakhi (you need to go by Punakha-Thimphu Highway) and 68 km from Thimphu (get to Punakhi on the same route).
