Charande - an abandoned ghost town

Once an influential and rich city, located on the shore of Lake Vozhe, today finally fell into decay. The abandoned ghost town Charande occupies a position that a few centuries ago seemed very beneficial. A trade route passed through the city, and this helped Charande grow into an influential center of the province. When the city was assigned to Dmitry Godunov in it, by his order, even a large Gostiny Dvor was built. Formation from a small settlement, which was mentioned in the XIII century, to a full-fledged city passed slowly.

City `s history

The status of the city Charonda was in 1708. At that time in the village lived about 11 thousand people. Also in this period Charande belonged to the Archangel province, and its authorities had the right to self-government within the city.

However, the status of the city Charande was not kept for long. The trade route running through the settlement began to be used less and less. In the district there were new ways to transport goods. And already in 1775 Charande again became a village and became part of the Belozersky district.

With the advent of Soviet power, the situation did not change and the city continued to fade away. The amazing and beautiful place was slowly but surely dilapidated. The old wooden houses were not renovated, the Charande Church of St. John the Zlatoust in 1828, built a hundred years later, was almost completely destroyed. The quay on Lake Vozha was gradually disintegrating. And even during the dawn of the Soviet Union, no road was ever made to the village of Charande in the Vologda region. The remaining people continued to live out their time in the village more likely because of the habit. New tenants did not appear. So, once a developed and interesting city, it turned into an "uninhabited island", into a ghost town, forgotten by the outside world.

Charonda today

It would seem that never Charande will not be able to regain its former status, and, perhaps, it is. Only in 1999 a young man named Alexei Peskov filmed a documentary about the ghost town Charande. In the film, he reflected the reality of the village and showed in what state the once important city came. The main characters of the picture were made by several local old-timers, who were able to tell the unconcerned facts about Charande. And let the local residents according to 2007 in the village only 8 people, but looking for romance and adventure tourists now visit Charande quite often.
