Church of St. Anthony


The Church of St. Anthony is one of the richest churches in Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is rich in both historical past and cultural heritage. Throughout the last century it was one of the centers of the spiritual life of Sarajevo . And to this day, after more than 100 years, its doors are open to visitors.

History

On March 26, 1912, the ceremony was held - laying the foundation stone, the new church of St. Anthony of Padua. It happened after March 15, 1912, served the last Mass in the dilapidated old church building. And by the end of September of the same year a church was built. The construction of the tower for a number of objective reasons lasted a little longer, and the newly built Catholic Church received the blessing on September 20, 1914. And in 1925 an organ choir was organized at the church.

In the 60s of the 20th century the church began to receive a modern look, at this time an artistic restoration is being carried out. Almost 20 years the building is painted by famous Croatian artists, including Ivo Dulcic, decorated with sculptures, mosaics.

The war of 1992-95. did not inflict special damage to the church, it did not hit any missiles, although several shells fell nearby and damaged the facade of the building and stained glass. But in 2000 all the consequences were eliminated, and in the autumn of 2006 valuable stained glass windows were restored.

What is it?

The new church was built according to the project of architect Josip Vantsas in the Neo-Gothic style. This was the last building that the great architect created for Sarajevo. In length this landmark reaches 31 meters, and in width - 18,50. The height of its central nave averages about 14.50 m. In addition, there is a 50-meter bell tower with 5 bells, the heaviest of which weighs more than 4 tons.

When you go inside, you will be amazed at the richness of this place. Here are kept paintings and sculptures, mosaics and frescos of Croatian masters. The altar is decorated with Juro Seder's fresco "Last Supper". And sculptor Zdenko Grgic created reliefs "The Way of the Cross", sculpture "St. Ante with the Child Jesus ", mosaic" Message of St. Ante "and" Song of the Sun Brother ". But the most memorable are, of course, the stained glass windows of Ivo Dulcic.

About the church of St. Anthony can be said that this is not only the church of Catholics, but in general the inhabitants of Sarajevo , regardless of religion. Anyone can visit her and pray in his own way, as stipulated by his religion.

The history of the place where today's attraction is located is also interesting. Before it there was an old church of the same name, built in 1881-1882, but it was very modest in size, and in the way of construction - only the foundation was stone, and she was all wooden. And very quickly decayed, so much so that it was not safe to live in. And in its place was erected a new church, today's, money for the construction of which was collected for 8 years.
