Gottlieben Castle


This medieval Swiss castle is often visited by tourists, since it is located in the picturesque surroundings of Constanta on Lake Constance. A small town, bearing the same name as the castle, is famous for its abundance of half-timbered houses, which makes it quite a colorful landmark of the country.

What is interesting about Gottlieben Castle?

The castle, originally erected as a defensive fortress, for several centuries of its existence belonged to many people who repeatedly transformed it. For example, first the castle was owned by Bishop Eberhard II von Waldburg - then it was a real bishop's residence, which was a luxurious castle on the water. Its founder even built a bridge of wood that connected the banks of the Rhine not far from the castle. The building itself was used as a prison, where the famous reformer Jan Hus was detained.

Since 1799, this Swiss castle was privately owned and belonged to Prince Louis Napoleon III, a German diplomat named Johann Wilhelm Mulon, opera singer Lisa della Caza. The shape of the castle is rectangular and has two powerful towers facing south. The style in which the building is built is neo-Gothic.

The city of Gottlieben is the smallest town in Switzerland , it has about 300 inhabitants. Gottlieben is located in the city, near the port. It is most convenient to use road transport for traveling here, especially since near the nearby hotel there is a "blue" (free) parking zone. From Zurich , 70 km away, take the A1 motorway, near the city of Winterthur, take the A7 motorway and follow the signs that lead you to Gottlieben.

You can view the castle from outside for free. But it is unfortunately impossible to get inside, since this is private property. But tourists have the opportunity to take a boat trip along the Lake Constance, from where a good view of the facade of the Gottlieben Castle opens.
