Military Tunnel

On the tourist map of Sarajevo there are not only traditional attractions , but also special places, which not everyone will venture to visit. This category includes the military tunnel, which became a museum.

Military Tunnel: the Way of Life

The military tunnel in Sarajevo is evidence of a prolonged siege of the city during the Bosnian war of 1992-1995. From the summer of 1993 to the spring of 1996, a narrow passage under the ground was the only way that connected the besieged Sarajevo to the outside world.

It took six months for the inhabitants of the city to dig a tunnel with picks and shovels. The "corridor of hope" or the "tunnel of life" served as the only route through which humanitarian supplies were transferred, and also for which the civilian population of Sarajevo could leave the city. The length of the military tunnel was then 800 meters, the width - just over one meter, the height - about 1.5 meters. During the war years, it really became a "corridor of hope", since only after its appearance it was possible to restore power supply and access to telephone lines, to resume supplies of food and energy resources.
