general information

The shrine reaches 70 m in height and is on an elevation in the Norrmalm area. Its history began in 1651 with a small wooden chapel located on this place. Over time, the structure began to require repair. And here's what happened next:

  1. In 1770, King Gustav the Third of Sweden signed an order to build a stone church.
  2. The design of St. John's Church in Stockholm was carried out by an architect at that time known as Ian Erik Rein. He planned to build a temple in the classical style and began to implement it in 1783 on September 14. Exactly one year after the commencement of construction on the orders of the monarch, work on the erection of the shrine was stopped.
  3. The king learned about the newfangled architectural trends and found the architect's project old-fashioned. However, the new mock-up was not approved by the church community, and the construction of the temple temporarily stopped. Work on its erection was restored in almost 100 years. In Sweden, a tender was held, which was won by Karl Möller.
  4. In his project, the church of St. John was planned to be built of red brick in the Gothic style, which greatly distinguishes it from other temples of Sweden. The building was started in 1883, on September 14 (exactly a century after the first unsuccessful attempt). Supervised construction of the shrine is the outstanding architect Axel Anderberg.
