Engelberg cheese

Swiss cheese is what we associate with Switzerland, not least. There are a lot of cheeses here, they are different, each with its own characteristics and character. Accordingly, the country is a lot of cheese. But the cheese factory in the monastery of Engelberg (Schaukäserei Kloster Engelberg) - the only one of its kind. Because here you can not just try the fresh fresh cheese of the highest quality, made by hand, but also watch the mystery of its production.

A bit about the monastery

The Engelberg Monastery was founded in 1120. For a long time, this Benedictine monastery was under the jurisdiction of the Vatican, until in 1798 it was not looted by the French. Later it was rebuilt.

What to see?

The cheese brewery of Engelberg is known not only for the highest quality of the chees produced here, but also because it is the only cheese factory created at the monastery where you can get acquainted with the process of making cheese. All cheese here is produced exclusively by hand. In four huge containers milk is turned into Engelberger Klosterglocke cheese, after which the cheese is pressed in the form of a bell, identical to what is in the monastery yard. And all this can be seen by all interested persons with their own eyes.

After a tour of the cheese factory, visitors will be greeted with a tasting of cheeses. A variety of their tastes can also be enjoyed in the restaurant at the factory. And if some cheese makes such a strong impression on you (and it sure will happen, do not doubt it) that you decide to take it home, such an opportunity will be given to you by the cheese shop. There you can buy various souvenirs .

How to visit?

You can get to the dairy by taking the train from Zurich to Engelberg . To the stop 5 minutes walk from the cheese factory (Engelberg, Brunnibahn) buses No.3 and 5 also run.
