Growing tobacco in the garden for smoking

Tobacco is grown in the garden not only for smoking. Its smell is an effective means of fighting against pests such as aphids , thrips and medina. Among the gardeners, the most popular brand of tobacco is Virginia.

Planting tobacco

Seeds of tobacco before planting are soaked and unfolded on gauze. They are planted in early April in boxes with earth, pouring in each hole a handful of seeds. Seeds are poured through the day with warm water using a sprayer, and when the first sheets appear - as the upper layer of the earth dries up.

Seedlings are planted in the open ground in early June. Thus it is necessary to wait for warm weather, as the temperature below + 3ºС at night can be fatal for a plant. To grow tobacco in the garden, you need to choose a moderately lit area, which is located under a slight slope and is protected from one side of the wind. Before planting the soil is fertilized with compost or manure.

Since tobacco takes up a lot of space on the site and reaches a height of about 3 m, usually no more than 10 bushes are planted. The distance between the bushes should be at least 30 cm, and between the beds - about 1 m.

Tobacco - growing in the country

Above the place where tobacco grows, a canopy is built to form a shadow during the day.

Top dressing plants are carried out three times: when planting in the open ground, when its growth reaches about 20 cm and when flowering begins. As fertilizers, it is recommended to use superphosphate, sulfur and manure, diluted with water in a ratio of 1/10.

To produce tobacco for smoking, the grown up bushes are excavated and dried upside down until a dark brown color develops.
