Holy Communion Cathedral

Christchurch is full of sights. They are located mainly in the center of the city. And one of the most significant is the Cathedral of the Holy Communion.

History of creation

The basis for the creation of the Council was the French church. It bears the name of Saint Vincent de Paul, is in Paris. The project of the New Zealand Cathedral of the Holy Communion was compiled by the architect Francis Petra. Construction began in 1901. In the place that was chosen for the new church, there was an old wooden church. It was demolished, and in 4 years the walls of the new cathedral rose here. On February 12, 1905, the first parishioners could see the interior of the basilica.

Is it worth it to go here?

Cathedral of the Holy Communion - the first project of an architect in the style of the Italian Renaissance. All of his previous buildings were exclusively Gothic. The second name of the Cathedral is the Crazy Basilica. When DB Shaw was in Christchurch, this architectural structure caused him genuine admiration.

New Zealand stands on the fault, earthquakes often occur here. Two of them happened with an interval of 1 year. The first occurred in September 2010. After him, the cathedral was closed for restoration. However, in 2011 another earthquake finished the work of the first one. Both belfries on the facade of the building collapsed, the stability of the dome was disrupted, and the cathedral was closed forever.

Now you can walk only in its surroundings, inside do not start up because of the threat of collapse. When this architectural sight of Christchurch will be fully restored is unknown. Clearly one thing is to try to do something with the original, because the building can be formed at any moment. The city administration is considering the decision to demolish the basilica and its complete reconstruction according to the surviving drawings.
