Homeland of the room monster

The monster plant is a native of the tropics, belongs to the family of aroids. The homeland of such a familiar room monster is South and Central America.

Where does a monster grow in nature?

In the south, the area of the flower covers most of Brazil, in the north - the peninsula of Yucatán and almost all of Mexico. In the 19th century the monster was brought to Southeast Asia and successfully settled down there.

In total there are about 50 species of plants belonging to the genus Monstera. Its name was given to the flower because of the giant size that it can reach in the open ground, as well as the bizarre appearance and related legends. In translation Monstera means "monster". Although, if you understand, there is nothing monstrous in it.

How does a monster behave in the wild?

The plant is a very beautiful, saturated evergreen creeper or shrub with climbing stems. They often hang down the air roots, and the carved leaves have a very large size. The inflorescence is a thick cylindrical cob, the flower is bisexual.

Aditional roots are needed for the plant for additional nutrition. As the humidity in the home of the indoor plant of the monster is increased, this is a way of adapting to the surrounding conditions. In nature this giant can reach up to 200 meters.

The leaves are a danger, since they are poisonous. They contain needle formations that, when they get into living mucous membranes, cause severe burning. Probably, for this reason, and also because of the finds of people and animals hanging from its stems and aerial roots, the monster was dubbed a killer plant and a monster.

In fact, trunks and roots simply sprouted through the skeletons of the unhappy lost in the jungle and, as they grew, raised them from the ground. But the rich imagination of the first travelers to the tropics painted far more terrible pictures of death. Today, it is nothing more than a legend, once again justifying the name of the plant.

However, there is another version of its origin. AT translation from the Latin word monstrosus means "quirky", "amazing." And thanks to its amazing external appeal, and also unpretentiousness, over time, the monster has become one of the favorite indoor plants in the whole world.

Care for decorative room monsters is to ensure a high temperature and humidity level. The plant likes good lighting, but without direct sunlight, frequent watering so that the land does not have time to dry up, but it was not too wet. With the right content, it can grow by 6 meters.
