Linares Palace

In history, there are many examples when palaces build on their own means and they live in them not only kings and their notable nobles, but also very rich ordinary citizens. And one such example is the Linares Palace in Madrid , which is located on Cibeles Square and has been its decoration since 1884.

The palace was built in the late XIX century by the architect Carlos Colubi for the Spanish banker Jose de Murga, who later received the title of the Marquis of Linares from the king for his services to his homeland. The building turned out to be beautiful and majestic in neo-baroque style, with a socle and three residential floors. In the basement classically the premises are divided between the kitchen, auxiliary storerooms and servants' rooms. On the floors of the gentlemen there were a library, an office and a billiard room, a music room, a bathroom, an eastern room and bedrooms and family members' boudoir. The fourth floor was considered a guest room, it was equipped with a winter garden, a gallery, bathrooms and guest bedrooms.

The rooms of the palace were richly decorated and furnished, as the Spaniards loved it, parquet, silk, tapestries and paintings, carpets and gilding adorn each room. Especially popular today among connoisseurs enjoy incredible beauty dining room and ballroom. The ceiling of the main dining room is decorated with paradise gardens and flying birds, and the ballroom is considered the most beautiful in Spain. In each room from the ceiling hang chic chandeliers. For tourist excursions, the palace garden is also open, where you can admire a small carved wood building called the "House of Tales".

After the tragic death of the banker, the family was left without money, as a result of which it was necessary to sell furniture and other things from the furnishings of the house. For history, these items have sunk into oblivion. In the Civil War, the palace turned into ruins, and after decades, in 1976, the remains of the building were recognized as a cultural heritage and began to be restored. According to the photos the palace was completely restored.

At present, in addition to the museum in the Linares Palace in Madrid, since 1992, there is the house of America (Casa de America), whose purpose is to maintain cultural relations with the countries of Latin America: exhibitions, film shows, festivals and much more.

How to get there and when to visit?

It is more convenient to take the subway line L2 to Banco de España station. The convenient location of the palace in the very center of the capital allows tourists in a matter of minutes to get to the Puerta del Sol and the equally popular Plaza Mayor . Another attraction of the city is just 300 m from the palace - this is the famous Gate of Alcalá .

The Mystery of the Linares Palace

With the Madrid Palace Linares is associated with a terrible legend, according to which, after years of happy marriage and the birth of the child, it became known that the Marquis and the Marquise were a brother and sister of the father. As a result, first the child is mysteriously dying, and then the banker himself. They say that since then, sad sighs of the child's ghosts and Marquise Linares have been heard in the castle walls.
