Monkey Bridge

A monkey bridge, or Saruhashi, is an ancient lift bridge, which today is a pedestrian bridge. He will be thrown across the Katsura River in Otsuki. Saruhashi took the place of honor among the three best bridges in the history of Japan .

Architectural features

The bridge to Otsuki was built in the early 14th century, although some scholars insist on the XII century. One way or another, it has a unique architecture. Today, the Monkey Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in Japan. It was repeatedly restored, but at the same time the original design of the bridge has survived to the present time, which is a rarity.

The height of the bridge is 30 m 90 cm, and the width - 3 m 30 cm. It connects two rocky high banks. Its name came from associations with monkeys, or rather, the way they moved. Once upon a time, instead of a rail, there were lianal branches on the bridge. Despite the strength of the structure, people at the transition still held on tightly to them, thus slightly resembling monkeys.

The bridge is built on two wooden platforms, each of them is four layers with a sharp elevation. It's like an upturned ladder.

The bridge is surrounded by dense vegetation, therefore it seems that civilization has not reached these places yet. On one of the banks near the edge is a road with wooden rails. Tourists often gather near them to admire Saruhashi from below.

Restoration of the bridge

The largest restructuring of the Saruhashi occurred in 1984, when it was decided to reinforce the base of the bridge with concrete. This was a necessary measure, otherwise one of Japan 's main attractions could collapse at any moment. Concrete supports are undoubtedly noticeable, but the bridge still remains a vivid example of the fact that a person can create unique designs without complex equipment, but only with the help of his hands.
