Painting on glass by own hands

Glass plates and jugs with a multicolored painting and gilded elements look very nice and expensive. The cost of such products in stores can be unpleasantly surprising, while hand-made products are not much cheaper (unique pattern, handmade). It is possible to create unique products with art glass painting on their own, it's not so difficult as it seems at first glance, and it takes a little time. The painting on the glass of the vase, for example, will take no more than 2 evenings.

Types of painting on glass

Painting on glass is performed in two main techniques:

  1. The technique of painting on glass with stained-glass paints. Stained-glass paints are transparent, bright, ideal for creating floral ornament. They require the use of a contour, since they very easily spread. Paints for stained glass are of two types: the first require baking in the oven, the second dry in the air for several days.
  2. Technique of painting on glass with acrylic paints. Acrylic colors - opaque, look like gouache. They can also paint flowers. Particularly beautiful is the painting with acrylic in technique "in one stroke": when each petal of a flower is not drawn in detail, but is applied with a wide rough brush in one motion. As a result, acrylic is stained with grooves and looks like a smear with oil paint on the canvas.

Painting on glass bottles with stained-glass paints

Painting with acrylic paints is more like painting with ordinary gouache and does not require any special skills. Painting with stained-glass paints requires skills in working with the outline.

For the painting you will need:

  1. A glass plate, a bottle, a vase. It is better to start with a plate, since its flat surface is more convenient in the list for beginners. A bottle or a vase is better to choose a square shape: even surfaces are easier to paint than convex ones.
  2. Paints for painting on glass are sold in shops with art goods, as well as in large office supplies. It is better to choose paints that do not require roasting: the masters note that they dry out quickly enough, and the paint does not fly away from the product, unless you try to do it on purpose. In addition, 20 days after application, even attempts to tear off the applied paint will not lead to success. Burning is useful if you need to quickly get the finished product, but this method has its drawbacks: the need to select the firing temperature and material for work (not every glass or ceramic can withstand firing in the oven).
  3. The contour can be chosen gold, black or silver. These variants of colors for contours are found most often, they also look best in the finished product. If you plan to apply a pattern in the form of delicate flowers, then the ideal outline is a silver and gold color. The black outline looks a little rough, it is used mainly for drawing buildings or faces. Using a contour in working with glass is necessary, without it you can not create any picture.
  4. For dot glass on the glass, only three-dimensional contours of different colors are selected, the colors themselves are not needed for point painting.

Stages of painting on glass with paints

The transformation of glass into a magical picture is carried out in several stages:

  1. The surface is degreased with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Some masters are limited only to damp baby napkins, but in this case the paint after a while can get off.
  2. The contour is applied. Be careful not to oil the already applied drawing. The circuit dries for at least 2 hours, so after the contour is applied, leave the work to dry. You need to create drawings with a lot of closed parts. All the lines of leaves of flowers should be connected, each petal must be finished, the images in the stained-glass window do not tolerate line breaks. The only exception is those contours that represent an independent line on a colored background, for example, curls.
  3. After the contour has dried, the details of the work are painted in the right colors with stained-glass paints.
  4. Some advise after drying the work to cover it with varnish, but this is not a prerequisite.

Stages of point glass on glass

Sometimes this painting is called painting a contour on the glass, tk. The whole pattern is created exclusively with the help of contours.

For a beautiful pattern and accurate work it is worth picking up quality contours (that is, not too liquid consistency) with a tube with a narrow long spout. A wide nozzle of the tube will leave large fat points, which in the finished product does not look very nice.

  1. The surface is degreased.
  2. The chosen pattern is applied only by points that are located at the same distance from each other. The main thing is to make sure that the points do not merge with each other and are the same size. Errors can be corrected with cotton wool soaked in alcohol, or with a usual wet wipe. It is customary to start the work in the dot list from the center, rather than from the outlines of the drawing - in this case the work will be more accurate, it will be possible to make changes to the drawing as needed.
