Pollensa

Pollensa (Mallorca) - a resort in the north-eastern part of the island, at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain; Nearby there are 2 more mountains: Calvary and Puig de Pollença. The resort is very popular - we can say that most of the tourists who vacation in Pollens, returning to Mallorca, prefer to spend their holidays here again. If other resorts are usually divided into "English", "Irish" and "German", then in Polensa tourists from all over the world have a rest.

Pollensa

The city of Pollensa has an ancient history and is rich in sights. It was founded in the 12th century by the Moors. The city developed rapidly both in the Moors and after the capture of the island by Christians, but as a result of the plague epidemic, the city was practically ruined. His second birth, he owed the Dominicans; began its restoration in the XVI century.

One of the main attractions is the Dominican monastery of San Domingo, in which today operates the city museum of Polenes. On the territory of the monastery is the church Nostra Senyora del Roser, in which there is a functioning body. However, you can listen to it only in special cases - for example, during important Catholic holidays. In the church is kept the icon of the Mother of God, written in the XV century. In the summer in the monastery is the Festival de Musica de Pollensa.

In front of the museum there is a unique sculpture-monument, made in the form of a bookcase, and at the ends of clay "books" are the names of 106 famous sculptors.

Another attraction is the church Nostra Senyora dels Angels, located in the central square of the city. It was built by the Templars in 1300.

The central square is the main place for evening walks of holidaymakers; it often hosts various events, for example - concerts, and in July and August there is a festival of classical music. Another large-scale event held on the square is the Mares de Deu dels Angels, a costume festival that reproduces the battle of the city's inhabitants with the 15,000-strong Moorish army led by the Dragut pirate, which occurred in 1550. In the action usually takes part more than a thousand people. The festival is held in early August.

The gardens of Juan March are almost in the center of the city. Its decoration is a Gothic tower with ivy woven over it and a fountain with a statue.

Another important attraction is climbing the stairs in 365 steps to the top of the Calvary, to the chapel at the top, on the altar of which there is a Gothic wooden cross. "Calvary" means the same as "Calvary" - a hill and named after this mountain in Jerusalem. Every year on Good Friday, many believers in black robes perform the Ascent to the Cross - the procession carries a cross with a model of the body of Christ, and when the top is reached the body is removed from the cross. The procession takes place in complete silence - only under the drums of the drums. By the way, a beautiful view of the city and the harbor opens from the top of the hill.

The streets of the city can also be considered a local landmark. Be sure to wander through them and enjoy the indescribable atmosphere of a medieval Mediterranean town.

Port, or travel from Polensa to Polensu

Like Soller, Pollensa has a satellite city with almost the same name - the port of Pollensa, located about 5 km from the "main" city. It was opened in 1830. Today the port de Pollença, the former commercial harbor, is actually the center of the resort. The harbor still exists and is one of the main attractions of the resort. Today it is used for parking yachts and fishing boats; come here and the big ships. From the harbor you can go on a boat trip to Menorca or to Cape Formentor . The marina is magnificent - it was expanded in the 90s of the last century, and now produces just a grandiose impression. Directly in the harbor are several restaurants, but the prices in them are too high.

Cape Formentor and the lighthouse

Cape Formentor is "the land's edge," as the locals call it; Cape goes to the strait separating Mallorca and Menorca. It is a nature reserve; there are many hiking and cycling routes. The main attraction of the cape is the lighthouse, which has been operating since 1863.

Beach season and weather in the resort

Pollensa is 3 kilometers from the beautiful beach. Due to the fact that the bay is reliably protected by two promontories, there are almost no storms in the bay, and the presence of breakwaters makes bathing even very inexperienced swimmers absolutely safe. There are also no submarine currents here. The sea is very clean, but jellyfish can appear in the middle of the season (more often in August, but sometimes at other times). In case you were suddenly stung by a jellyfish, you urgently need to contact the rescuers, who are always on duty at the beach.

The beach is located in the southern part of the resort, the descent to the sea is very smooth. There are many wide paths along which you can walk and ride a bicycle.

Despite the fact that the city is the most northern on the island, the weather in Pollens in summer is hot enough - the temperature rises above + 30 ° С. The most "hot" months are from July to September inclusive. Even in February, which is the coldest month in the resort, the average daily temperature is at around +13 ° C. The wettest month is November: the maximum number of rainy days in a month is 9.
