Sarek National Park

In the north of Sweden, in the province of Lappland, in the commune Jokmokk lena Norrbotten there is the Sarek National Park. Next to it are the parks of Padielante and Stura-Schöffallet . This is a popular place for experienced tourists and climbers, but newcomers rarely come here.

Features of the Sarek Park

The oldest national park in Europe, Sarek, is somewhat different from other parks in Sweden , and this is what:

  1. The form of the national park is a circle with a diameter of 50 km. In the whole park there is only one tourist route, called the Royal path. There are only two bridges, so water obstacles are often ford. In the park Sarek there are no equipped parking lots, cabins and other amenities. Hut hotels are only along the borders of Sarek Park. Movement on vehicles in the park is prohibited.
  2. Showers. Another feature of the national park in Sweden - this area is considered the rainiest in the whole country. Therefore, walking is very dependent on weather conditions. Tourists here can themselves make their own routes, resorting to the help of local instructors and guides.
  3. The mountains. In the park Sarek there are 8 mountain peaks, the height of which is more than 2000 m. One of the highest mountains of Sweden - Sarekchokko - is practically inaccessible, since the ascent to it is very long and complex. Here at an altitude of 1800 m in 1900 an observatory was created. Now it looks like a high-tech metal structure. But they are accessible for climbing the peaks Skierfe, Skarjatjakka, Nammath and Laddepakte. Above you can see truly beautiful views of valleys, rivers and neighboring mountains.
  4. Glaciers and ponds. In the Sarek National Park, protected by UNESCO, there are about 100 glaciers: for such a territory this is a kind of record. The ice does not melt even in summer. Several rivers flow through the park, one of which - Rapapaeto - is filled with the meltwater of several glaciers. In winter, there is a danger of avalanches.
  5. Fauna and flora. To severe conditions of the Sarek park, animals such as wolverine, brown bear, squirrel, roe deer, deer, lynx, moose and others have adapted. Grayling and trout are found in the clear water of mountain rivers. However, a special license is required to fish in these areas. In the park you can collect organic berries and mushrooms.

How to get to Sarek National Park?

Some tourists decide to drive to the famous Sarek park by car. Having reached the capital of Finland Helsinki by any means of transport , you can continue to drive along the picturesque shore of the Gulf of Bothnia. From a distance, the coast of Sweden can be identified by windmills, which are installed throughout the coast. Then you need to turn to the E4 highway, follow E10 towards Galivare and go further along the E45 to Vakkotavare in the Sarek National Park. You can get to these mountain ranges by helicopter taxi, however, this trip will cost you quite expensive.
