The Citadel (Budva)

Budva is one of the most beautiful cities in Montenegro and an important tourist resort of the country . Its second unofficial name, "Montenegrin Miami", is given not by chance: it is here that the best beaches of the Budva Riviera and the most famous nightclubs of Montenegro are located. Especially popular among travelers is the Old Town of Budva, whose main attraction is the fortress Citadel. Let's talk about it in more detail.

Historical facts

The old fortress in Budva (Montenegro) was founded in the distant 840 to protect the local population from the attacks of the Turks. Unfortunately, until our times from the once largest fort on the entire Adriatic coast, only the old walls have been preserved. Most of the structures that we see today were completed only in the middle of the 15th century.

The ancient legend relates the history of the Citadel's origin, according to which many years ago two lovers whose parents were against their marriage decided to rush from the cliff into the sea and so stay together forever. Fortunately, the pair did not break, and, according to legend, only turned into fish, the image of which became a kind of symbol of the city. It was this drawing that was painted on one of the fortress walls.
