Almost in the heart of the capital of Laos is one of its main attractions - the triumphal arch of Patusay. Despite the fact that its prototype was a triumphal arch in Paris, the architects managed to reflect in it a typically Laotian design.
The history of the triumphal arch of Patusay
The design and erection of this memorial took place in those years when the country was going through hard times. Initially, the structure was called Anusavari, which in translation meant "memory." Thus, the city authorities wanted to pay tribute to the soldiers who died during the war for the country's independence from France.
After the coup d'état was carried out in 1975 by Patet Lao, the arch in Vientiane became known as Patusay. In Sanskrit this means "the gate of victory".
Architectural style of the triumphal arch of Patusay
The monument is designed in a characteristic for Laotian architecture style. It is decorated with five towers, each of which symbolizes the principle of the existence of world nations. In addition, the towers are a kind of reflection of the five Buddhist precepts.
The triumphal arch of Patusai in Laos has a distinct division into four:
- four passes pointing to the sides of the world;
- four ponds, each of which symbolizes the petal of the lotus;
- four statues of the King of the Naga, denoting fertility, happiness, nature and prosperity.
The image of the lotus, which consists of ponds, is a tribute of respect to the inhabitants of the country to the soldiers who fought for their homeland.
The very triumphal arch of Patusay is divided into three levels, which lead to two ladders:
- on the ground floor is the administration that manages the memorial;
- the second is reserved for the museum of glory;
- on the third floor there are observation platforms.

The decorations of the towers are high spiers and leafy ornaments. The central tower offers a panoramic view of the city. This military memorial is located in the heart of the prefecture, on Ave Lane Xang Street. To see the Patusay Arch, you need to drive 1.5 kilometers southwest of the center of Vientiane . To do this, you must follow the road Rue 23 Singha or Asean Road. However, in the second case it is necessary to make a small hook.
