Wat Simsiang

What is interesting temple Wat Simsiang

This is one of the most ancient Buddhist temples of the country, it was founded in 1563 by the king of Settitarat. The temple of Wat Simyang is located in the eastern part of Vientiane , the capital of Laos. In the XVIII century the troops of Siam partially destroyed the temple, but later it was completely restored.

What to see?

Archaeologists have found out that the temple complex of Wat Simyang stands on the ruins of the Khmer stupa. Some of the remains of the former structure are visible beyond the main building of the monastery. It is noteworthy that lateritic bricks, of which the ancient stupa was built, is not found anywhere else in Vientiane.

In front of one of the main entrances to the temple is a statue of King Sisavang Wong. The main entrance is decorated with figures of snakes and dogs. The main building of Wat Simyanga is divided into two parts. In the first, Buddhist rituals are performed, and the monks give blessings to all who ask.

In the second part is placed the main altar with the main relic of the monastery - the gilded former city pillar that goes deep into the altar. According to legend, while laying a pillar, a pregnant woman, Si, was killed. Townspeople, coming to the temple, turn to her "Lady Si Myang" and pay her homage.

There are also many Buddha images. The entire building of the temple of Wat Simsha, both inside and outside, is decorated with pictures of the biography of the famous guru who has attained enlightenment. It is believed that in the monastery is hidden one of the most valuable and largest collections of bronze Buddha statues in Laos.

How to get to the temple?

The easiest way to get to the temple is Wat Simaang on tuk-tuk or taxi. If it is easier for you to use city public transport , then go to the bus stop Khua Din.

From Thailand, you can get to the temple through the Bridge of Thai-Laotian Friendship , then heading along the main road of Setthathirath. Walking independently on Vientiane , you can get to the temple by coordinates: 17 ° 57'29 "N and 102 ° 37'01 "E. The temple is open daily from 7.00 to 17.00, admission is free. You can make a personal offering in the form of flowers, bananas and coconuts.
