Trondador

On the border between the states of Chile and Argentina is Mount Trondor (Cerro Tronador), which is a sleeping volcano.

general information

Trondador is located in the south of the Andes, near the city of San Carlos de Bariloche , and is surrounded by two National Parks : Nahuel Huapi (located in Argentina) and Llanquique (in the country of Chile). The last date of the eruption is not known exactly, but the researchers suggest that it occurred more than 10 thousand years ago, during the Holocene epoch. The volcano is considered to be geologically active, but with a rather low probability of awakening.

The name of Mount Tronadore from Spanish translates as "Thunderer". This name came about because of the constant rumbling that produces incessant landslides. They can be heard even today.

Description of the mountain

The volcano has a maximum height of 3554 m above sea level, which stands out among the other mountain ranges. It has three peaks: eastern (3200 m), western (3320 m) and main - central.

On the slopes of Tronadora there are 7 glaciers, which, due to global warming, begin to melt and thus feed local rivers. On the territory of Argentina there are four of them:

And the other three are located in Chile: Río Blanco, Casa Pangue and Peulla. On one of the glaciers there is a section completely painted in a dark color. This happened because of the deposits and accumulations of various rocks and sand. This segment of the local population was nicknamed the "Black Drift". It is considered one of the main attractions , which today is enjoyed by tourists.

Ascension to the volcano

The best view of Tronadore opens from the village of Pampa Linda: at a closer distance, the top of the volcano will no longer be visible. Among travelers, climbing a mountain is very popular.

On one of the slopes is the club "Andino Bariloche", here leads a steep path, along which you can ride on horseback. Tourists are offered specially equipped accommodation and a delicious lunch, and the opening views fascinate the view. For many "conquerors" this is the final point of travel, as further movement on the mountain is possible only on foot and accompanied by an instructor.

To visit Trondador is best in the summer, when lush greenery and bright flowers cover the foot of the mountain, numerous waterfalls are pleasantly refreshing, and the air is filled with a special aroma. Here you can find deer and a variety of birds. Many tourists organize picnics on the shore of the lake, not only to admire the wild nature, but also to hear the famous roar. In winter, the volcano is covered with a thick layer of snow, which greatly hinders the ascent.

How to get to Mount Trondor?

From the city of San Carlos de Bariloche to the volcano can be reached with organized excursions , which in the village is offered a huge variety, or by car on the highway Av. Exequiel Bustillo. At the foot of the mountain, be careful: if you decide to climb up the serpentine by car, then consider that the road here is narrow and complex, covered with small gravel.

When planning a trip to the volcano of Tronador, do not forget to put on comfortable sports shoes and clothes. And that nothing has overshadowed your rest, take with you drinking water, a camera and repellents.
