Lake Flamingo

Isabela Island , on which you can find the Flamingo Lake, is the largest on the Galapagos . Like other corners of the archipelago, it is remarkable for the uniqueness of flora and fauna. Here there are many azure lagoons and quarries - favorite habitats and nesting places for flamingos, some of the most elegant birds in the world. Here they get their own food and lay eggs directly on the shallows in pits of wet silt.

Tourist season for monitoring the flamingo

The best season for watching tourists behind these graceful birds is the period from December to May. If you want to see an unusual enchanting spectacle - a flamingo dance, then you need to arrive at the lake around 7 o'clock in the morning. Firstly, the birds gather in a group, line up, then start gracefully pacing up and down - all together, turning their heads in one direction and laughing funny. Such a "concert" lasts a few minutes, after which the group disperses in its business.

Flamingos feed on shallow waters off the coast with various algae, mollusks, crustaceans, insect larvae, and small fish. The special shape of the beak allows them to filter the water and obtain their own food. By the way, the pink color of the plumage of these birds is due to their type of food. The main diet is different types of crustaceans, in which the substance karatinoid is contained. Below the feathers are black and white, and this is clearly seen when flying birds.

How to get there?

To get to the lake Flamingo, you need to land on the island of Isabela . Since this is one of the most popular places for tourists, it is included in the program of almost any tour or cruise on the islands. In addition, the island can be reached by water transport independently.

Lake Flamingo is located near the nursery of giant Galapagos turtles. There is a colony of 25-30 birds. Often these pink feathers nest in packs, but strolling along the island, one can find flamingos in other places, slowly walking alone and lazily pecking silt in shallow water.

To get a closer look at the flamingo's habits and admire their beauty on the island, it's worthwhile to stay for a few days. So you can see and learn a lot of interesting from the life of these pink birds.
