Lago Puelo

Natural features of the park

Lago Puelo National Reserve is located in the north-western region of Chubut province in the territory of Patagonia. The total area of ​​the park is 277 square meters. km, and its maximum height above sea level reaches 200 m. The climate of this region is somewhat cold and humid, during the winter there are frequent snowfalls. Lago Puelo was created to preserve and protect the highlands of the Andes and the ecological regions of Patagonia. Officially declared a national park and included in an independent reserve in 1971.

Lake Puelo

The mountain zone, on which the park is located, was changed under the influence of glaciers, which formed a lot of rivers and lakes. One of them, Lake Puelo, covers a small mountain area about 10 km east of the Chilean border. The National Park is named in honor of this reservoir. A high level of glacial precipitation gives it a rich blue color. The maximum depth of the lake is about 180 m, and the Puelo area is characterized by a fairly warm and temperate climate with an average annual temperature of 10-11 ° C.

What else to see in the park?

The main representative of the plant world are the rain forests of Avelano, Ulmo, Lingue and others. Often there is an exotic plant - a rose Mosqueta. On the territory of Lago Puelo you can see the red fox, puma and many different birds. In Lake Puelo, there are some types of trout.

In addition to the huge animal and vegetable diversity in the park, tourists can get acquainted with the rock art left by the first settlers. Now the tribes of the Mapuche community inhabit the eastern part of the reserve.

How to get to the national park?

A unique protected area is best left from the city of Lago Puelo, which is located about 4 km from the landmark. The fastest route passes along the route RP16. By car it can be reached in about 10 minutes. Tourists wishing to get to know the amazing Argentine nature, can go on a walking tour to the park also on the road RP16. Such a walk in time will take about an hour.
