When to clean cabbage?

Cabbage is an excellent vegetable with a good vitamin content and excellent dietary properties. It is difficult to imagine a family that does not consume this fruit: without it, a full borsch is impossible, and in winter and spring cabbage generally is saved by our weakened organisms because of the lack of vitamins and sun rays. That is why many happy owners of the "six hectare" prefer to grow cabbage with their own hands, to then get a clean crop of chemicals. But those summer residents, who first grow a vegetable, may face a number of problems. After all, cabbage, like any agricultural crop, has a number of characteristics. This also applies to the timing of harvesting white cabbage. This is what will be discussed.

When to clean cabbage?

The correctly selected harvesting time for cabbage guarantees a long-term storage for the truck farmer. The fact is that if the heads are collected late, they will quickly crack and throw arrows. If cabbage is harvested before the due date, then it will fade very early and then become unusable.

In general, first of all, before harvesting on the garden, the owner of the garden needs to pay attention to the obvious signs of maturing cabbage. Usually the cabbage begins to yellow the lower layer of leaves. In this case, the fork must achieve characteristic for the variety of sizes and harden. But aside from these signs, one should also rely on the characteristics of a particular variety. If we talk about when to remove the early cabbage, then the optimal time for this is the end of July - August. However, keep in mind that the heads of the early ripening varieties are not stored for long, so it is better to use them immediately, and not store.

With regard to the timing of harvesting cabbage mid-ripening varieties, it is usually cut off the vegetable forks in September. If you cultivated a culture for long-term storage, we recommend that you do not allow the heads to freeze. If this happens (as it is known, frosts are possible in the early autumn morning), it is better to let the cabbage settle and then cut it off.

If we talk about when to remove the late cabbage, the optimal time for this is the end of October - the middle of November. The time for cutting the head is chosen depending on the purpose of using the vegetable: for example, for cabbage cabbage is best cut in mid-October. If late-maturing varieties are planned to be used for long-term storage, then the vegetable should be excavated along with the root in late October-early November. And to improve the quality of cabbage in the morning watered, and in the evening they are collecting. Do not be frightened if the cabbage freezes - the vegetable does not suffer a cold snap to -5 degrees. However, if this happens, do not cut the sticks out of the way - forks will spoil and blacken. It is better to wait until the leaves are thawed.

It is equally important to take into account weather conditions for successful harvesting of cabbage. The best fork is stored, which were collected at a low temperature of air - + 5 + 7 degrees, preferably in sunny weather, but not in a day with high humidity. The exception, perhaps, is early-ripening varieties.

How to save the cabbage harvest?

In addition to the correct collection of forks, cabbage should be stored in suitable conditions. First, go through the harvested crop: separate the cracked or loose heads, which will start to deteriorate in the first place. It is best to tolerate winter tight forks with two cover sheets of green. Blackened leaves remove, and chop the cutlets, leaving them only 3-4 cm.

Selected heads are placed in the basement on boards, straw or bricks with cobs upwards at temperatures up to + 3 + 4 degrees. By the way, to avoid the appearance of rot, the storage room is better disinfected with whitewash lime.
