When to transplant a lilac?

Lilac is a very popular flowering shrub. To share such a plant with a neighbor is very simple, as it gives annually a large number of saplings. But in order for the bush to take root in a new place, you should know when you can transplant the lilacs.

At what time of year can you transplant the lilacs?

Most bushes are recommended to be transplanted either in autumn or spring, but this schedule is not suitable for a spring beauty. As it does not sound surprising, but the best time for the lilac transplant is the end of the summer. This is due to the fact that the plant will already be at rest and well rooted before the onset of winter cold.

If you did not manage to do this in the second half of August, the transplantation can be carried out later, but in this case there is a risk that the roots of the lilac will not have time to take root. The spring transplant should be carried out before blossoming, otherwise the bush will strongly hurt or even die. Determine that the young lilac is ready for transplantation, it is possible by its lignification, that is, when the color of the trunk changes to brown from the bottom to the uppermost kidney.

When can I transplant an adult lilac to another location?

In cases where it is necessary to transplant an already formed shrub aged 6-8 years, this can be done only at the end of summer. In this period, the ground part rests, and the root system is actively functioning, so rooting takes place more quickly. An adult bush should be excavated only in the evening with a large clod of earth. It is recommended that you remove all dead and unnecessary branches in advance.

When transplanting lilacs at any time it will be necessary to dig a sufficient pit, put drainage on the bottom and fertilize it well (ash, humus). After this, it is always good to water. In the autumn transplant, it is better to immediately cover the ground around the trunk.
