Why do tomatoes twist the leaves?

If you only recently planted tomatoes, or as they are also called - tomatoes, in a greenhouse, then after a while after planting, you may notice that leaves are folding in tomato seedlings.

Tomatoes are very demanding plants, which require strict observance of the conditions of their maintenance. Even at the slightest discrepancy to such conditions they will signal you about their condition, for example, you may notice that tomato leaves curl upward.

Why do tomato leaves twist?

If your tomato seedlings are growing and the leaves are twisted, several reasons may contribute to it:

  1. Overheating of the plant . If in the greenhouse you are too hot and the thermometer readings exceed the 35 degree mark, the leaves may lack the moisture that they need for natural cooling. At this temperature, nutrients are worse absorbed and the leaves begin to experience hunger. As a result, you can observe twisted leaves from tomatoes. And in especially severe cases, they can even wither. To save tomatoes, it is enough to water the plant once and then to additionally spray its leaves with urea (two tablespoons of liquid are needed per bucket of water). Two days later, instead of urea, a weak solution of potassium permanganate is used.
  2. Lack of fluid. In this case, the leaves can begin to curl in the boat. Restoring in this situation, the plant will have to last long enough - an average of two weeks.
  3. Lack of fresh air . In case of insufficiently frequent airing in the greenhouse, too, it can become too stuffy, therefore, the curliness of the leaves of the top of the tomato may appear.
  4. The seedlings were improperly patched when its lower leaves were too quickly removed. The rules of gardening prescribe to remove lateral processes when their length has reached ten centimeters. Tear off the leaves should be no earlier than three weeks after planting seedlings in the soil. In this case, the leaves should be cut off not more than once a week. Such manipulations will allow tomatoes to provide more light and heat.
  5. Wrong choice of means of additional fertilizing . Excessive enthusiasm for fertilizers, which include nitrogen, can cause the leaves to dry. The lack of potassium, phosphorus, copper and calcium can cause the twisting of tomato leaves. Also manure is contra-indicated as a fertilizer, as it also damages leaves as a result of ammonia release. In this case, complex fertilizers (for example, solution, potassium monophosphate) should be used to treat twisting.
  6. The presence of a viral disease in the plant . To stop the leaves from curling, they can be sprayed with special chemicals.

In order to understand why leaves are folded in tomatoes, the regime of care for them and the conditions for their maintenance should be reviewed. It is necessary to maintain a certain level of soil moisture, avoiding its drying out or excessive moistening. The introduction into the soil of complex fertilizers, which include such trace elements as potassium, calcium, phosphorus and copper, will promote the active growth of tomatoes and keep its leaves fresh and green. It is also necessary to carefully inspect the plant for the presence of such pests as spider mite, tobacco thrips, whitefly and Colorado beetle . If you find that the tops of the leaves have wrung from your tomatoes, then do not be upset: adequate treatment will help restore their original appearance. If you strictly follow the agrotechnics of cultivation of tomatoes, then you will never know such a problem as twisting of leaves.
