Basel-Badischer-Bahnhof

Basel is a city rich in various kinds of attractions, museums and places of interest. It is located on the border with Germany, and is the second largest in Switzerland . Therefore, there are two large railway stations here. And one of them is a very funny curiosity in terms of international relations. This is the train station Basel-Badischer-Bahnhof.

The Basel-Badischer station was opened in 1855. From it the development of the railroad in Basel began. The building itself was built in 1906-1913. of sandstone, and the line was laid from the German town of Baden. The structure bears the features of Romanesque architecture.

The building has two towers, one of which is a clock tower. The entrance is crowned by four statues, they symbolize the elements of fire, earth, water and air. And on the pediment of the roof depicts the ancient Roman god Mercury. On the station square, on both sides of the entrance there are two fountains. They are called to symbolize the confluence of the rivers Vise and the Rhine.

The special status of Basel-Badischer-Bahnhof

The station is a vivid example of a peculiar incident in international relations. The station itself is located on the territory of Switzerland. But in 1852 an agreement was signed, according to which the aprons and part of the tunnel that leads to them, have the status of the territory of Germany. The station is serviced by German railways, and in fact it does not belong to Switzerland at all. The border crossing between states is located in a tunnel leading from the hall to the aprons. What is characteristic, the lobby itself, like the shops in it, is the territory of Switzerland. Therefore, you need to be prepared for the fact that the Swiss franc is used here.

Today Basel-Badischer-Bahnhof serves mainly the direction of Eastern Europe. Most of the trains go to Germany. There are both directions of internal communication, and suburban electric trains. There is even a train to Moscow. Although it is not a train, it is a trailer car, but it can also bring Russians home with complete comfort.
