Museum of Cultures

Basel is one of the three largest cities in Switzerland (after Zurich and Geneva ). There is a huge number of educational institutions, including the oldest university in Switzerland. And in more than 20 museums of the city unique collections and artifacts are collected. Each exposition deserves attention and is capable to open to the admirers a lot of interesting and entertaining facts.

More about the museum

Quite famous and popular among tourists is the Museum of Basel Cultures. It was opened in 1849, and since then has twice been amenable to reconstruction. This is due to the fact that the collection of its exhibits was inexorably growing, and the museum simply did not have enough space. What is characteristic, for the problem of lack of space, a very interesting solution was applied. Since the Museum of Cultures is located in the center of Basel, in a cramped environment among other historically and culturally valuable buildings, extension by extension was impossible. Therefore, it was decided to sacrifice the ancient roof of the building, set up an additional floor and thus expand the interior space of the building. Today, the roof of the museum is one of its highlights. It is made of dark green hexagonal tiles, and this gives the roof of the building a certain "scaly" image. Nevertheless, the renewed view of the building of the pillars fits into the medieval panorama of the city.

During the reconstruction, the location of the main entrance was also changed. Today it passes through the former back yard of the museum complex. This allowed us to create a certain atmosphere of coziness, which you penetrate even at the entrance to the Museum of Basel cultures.

Exposition of the Museum of Cultures of Basel

Today the collection of the museum complex contains more than 300 thousand artifacts, and is one of the largest ethnological collections of exhibits. It is brought literally from all corners of the world. There is an exhibition of ritual items of tribes from Sri Lanka, and the cultural heritage of Asian peoples, and paintings by famous artists. Near each exhibit there is a sign with explanations in English. What is characteristic is that the exposition is not complete. Most of the artifacts are in the storage of the museum complex, since the problem of space deficit remains relevant. But this allows visitors to learn something for themselves every time. In addition, the collection of ancient values is constantly replenished.

In addition to ethnographic exhibits, the museum has a collection of 50 thousand historical photographs. Here they are not only a source of any information about the past, but also an object of close attention of visitors. Periodically, the museum hosts seminars and conferences on various topics, temporary exhibitions are held.
