Brunei River

The most famous river in Brunei has the same name as the state itself. It is noteworthy that she earned her popularity not due to special characteristics. In fact, the Brunei River is perhaps the shortest of all the major rivers in the country. It does not differ either in record depth or in rare species of fish. The thing is that it is on this river that most of the most interesting attractions of Brunei are located - unusual "villages on the water".

Features of the Brunei River

The Brunei river flows in the Brunei Mura district, in the north of the island of Klimantan, through the capital of the state Bandar Seri Begawan . The main characteristics of this reservoir:

Since ancient times, the Brunei River was of great strategic importance. It has always been a valuable source of fresh water. In addition, due to geological and geographical features of the landscape, for a long time all transport communication in the country was concentrated in the valleys of large rivers. Most of Brunei was covered with impenetrable tropical forests. This explains the fact that almost all the settlements in Brunei are near rivers and fresh lakes.

If you are lucky, you can witness a spectacular spectacle. Every year on the river Brunei, swimming competitions are held on traditional boats.

Water walks along the river Brunei

Every tourist who visits Brunei has two places on his list of places that must be visited. It is the most beautiful mosque in the whole Asia-Pacific region, named after Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin, and the Brunei village on the water.

The most popular settlement on the river in Brunei is the village of Kampung Ayer, consisting of 28 separate small villages. The reason for this is its convenient location (it is located in the capital, where most of the tourists stay) and an expanded infrastructure. In addition to residential buildings and outbuildings, there are shops, mosques, schools, kindergartens and even a police station and a fire station.

In Kampung Ayer people like tourists and always welcome guests. Houses are built right on the river, raising them slightly above the water level on special piles. The connecting links between them are bridges-decks.

To go on a tour of the Brunei River, it's enough to approach any public dock. For 50-60 Brunei dollars (€ 33-40) you will be offered a one-hour tour of the "village on the water". To go further along the river valley to the tropics, you will have to pay more. But it definitely costs. You will fall into the fairy-tale rainforest and make stunning photos along the way. Especially tourists are impressed with mangroves, sometimes you can meet on the shore of rare fauna (monkey-noses, pangolins, rhino birds).
