Norwegian National Theater

Perhaps the most important cultural asset of the fjord country is the Norwegian National Theater, a drama theater founded in the heart of Oslo in 1899.

Great Creation

The building of the theater was erected on the street Karl-Juhan on the architect's project Henrik Bull. The Norwegian playwright, Ibsen Henryk Juhan, is considered to be the creator of the Norwegian theater, which initiated large-scale construction.

The pompous opening of the Norwegian National Theater took place on September 1, 1899 and lasted 3 days. On the stage were the comedies of the famous Ludwig Holberg, Henrik Ibsen's drama The Enemy of the People, Bjernson's work Sigurd the Crusader. The auditorium was attended by the founder of the theater, as well as the monarchs of Sweden and Norway .

Historical reference

In the first years of its existence, the theater was kept only on private funds and voluntary donations of citizens. In 1906, Norway gained independence, and the dramatic theater began to be financed with funds from the state treasury.

Since 1983, the Norwegian National Theater has been listed as a cultural heritage of Norway.

During the Second World War, the barracks of fascist soldiers were located in the theater's premises. At the same time performances continued to be staged on the stage, but the repertoire consisted exclusively of works by German authors. During the occupation, some workers of the theater were arrested.

In the first decade of October 1980, a fire broke out in the building of the National Theater in Oslo, in which its stage and equipment were seriously damaged. The cause of the ashes was a faulty spotlight. Fortunately, the auditorium survived thanks to the time in the lowered fire curtain.
