Cape Suarez

The rocky Cape of Suarez or Punta Suarez, as it is sometimes called, is the main attraction of the island of Hispaniola, part of the Galapagos Islands group. The Galapagos Islands themselves are part of Ecuador and are located at a distance of 972 km from its mainland.

Flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands served as a base for the famous explorer Charles Darwin in his works on the theory of the origin of species. Today, the natural sights of the Galápagosses are no less attractive to tourists.

What to see?

Since the middle of March, more than 12,000 pairs of the world's rarest Galapagos albatross go to Cape Suarez for nesting. Here, the largest colony of blue-footed boobies equips its nests. If you're lucky, you can see their unusual marriage dance.

When you go to the Punta Suarez, you can see the nesting places of the following birds:

At the lava coast of the cape you can see kielhavostyu lizards, sea and lava iguanas, which shimmer in the sun with bright flowers, as well as sea lions. And on several cliffs of volcanic origin you can see a unique phenomenon - the sea fountain. Stone blocks here have an air outlet, from where, when a wave rolling on the shore, like a jet from a geyser, a column of sea water rises. The height of this column, depending on the strength of the wave can reach 20 m.

When to visit?

Come to Cape Suarez better in the period from mid-March to December, when the rainy season comes to an end and the nesting period of rare albatrosses begins. But in the summer months there are often storms, and the air temperature drops to 20 ° C, with an average annual at 24 ° C. The highest tourist season is the period from December to May, when the water temperature is 22-25 ° C.

How to get there?

Since the island of Hispaniola is the most southerly island of the entire archipelago, it is possible to get here only as part of a cruise. The average price of a four-day cruise per person on a class "Economy" boat is $ 1000. Remember that for the entrance to the Galapagossa you will need to pay a tourist fee of $ 100. From the place of disembarkation from the cruise ship to the Cape of Suarez, you will have to walk along the hiking trail about 2 km.
