The Iron House

Everyone knows the most famous creation of Gustave Eiffel - the Eiffel Tower. But few can call his other masterpieces. We decided to correct this situation and introduce you to the Iron House, or Casa de Fierro (La Casa de Fierro).

From the history of the Casa de Fierro mansion

Iron House - a mansion in the city of Iquitos, which is considered a symbol of the heyday of Peru during the rubber fever of the XIX-XX centuries. At that time planters received so impressive funds for the export of rubber that richly decorated mansions grew in the city one by one. But they still were not compared to the Iron House.

The mansion was conceived by Don Anselmo de Aguila. And the designer of it was the famous Frenchman Gustave Eiffel. He cast the construction of the house in Belgium and brought it to Iquitos by steamer. To have in the almost completely wooden city a metal building created on the expanses of Europe was then considered simply the height of luxury. Additional value to the building was given by the fact that it was extremely difficult to keep it. Metal spoiled from frequent rains, too much heated under the scorching sun. Therefore, it was simply impossible to live there. The building changed owners all the time. While the next of them at the end of the twentieth century did not decide to do something like a nightclub there.

The modern life of the Casa de Fierro

Now the building is owned by Judith Acosta de Fortes. He organized the life of this capricious mansion as follows: on its ground floor there are souvenir shops, and on the second floor there is an Amazonas cafe where you can taste local cuisine and, as they say, the best coffee in the city. In addition, the building itself is considered one of the main attractions of Peru .

How to get there?

The Casa de Fierro is located right in front of the main square of Iquitos between Próspero and Putumayo streets. You can get to it by taking a car for rent or walking, walking around the city.
