Castle Jaunpils


Jaunpils - a small village, which is home to no more than 2000 people, but it houses an ancient castle. This castle is interesting to visit, because, despite its age, it is well preserved. In Latvia, there are many castles, but almost all of them are destroyed, unlike Jaunpils Castle. Here you can feel the power and medieval aura.

What is interesting about the castle?

According to the records of the chroniclers, Jaunpils Castle was built in 1301. It belonged to the Livonian Order. On three sides it is surrounded by a moat. First a small group of knights settled here. Later, the castle was rebuilt and fortified, a large defensive tower was erected. For his long life, he passed from hand to hand, but the longest-lived family owned von Recke.

  1. The museum . The oldest part of the residential premises of Jaunpils Castle is reserved for the museum. Here are copies of knight armor and weapons, models of castles. Local artists and artisans constantly exhibit their work here.
  2. Pub . In one of the oldest sections of the castle, in the chivalry dining room, there is a medieval pub of the castle Jaunpils. With the light of candles and the sounds of ancient music, guests have the opportunity to enjoy delicious food. The pub is known for its holidays. These are real adventures in medieval style. Even the table is covered in the spirit of that time.
  3. Medieval festival . Every year on the first Saturday of August in the courtyard of the castle is the Medieval Festival. Knights are fighting with each other to win the favor of the lady of the castle. Fairs of applied art, concerts and exhibitions are held. And on the evening of January 1 of each year in the castle Jaunpils there is a carnival.

How to get there?

The bus from Tukums runs once a day, so the most convenient is a taxi. By car the trip will take 30 minutes and will cost about $ 20.
