Cathedral of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary


Cathedral of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary - the temple of the Greek Catholic diocese in Buenos Aires . It is also called the Ukrainian Cathedral. The construction of the temple began in 1961 on the initiative of the holy father of Joseph Galabard. Originally it was planned that it would be consecrated in the name of the Nativity of Christ. But the head of the diocese, Andrei Sopelyak, changed his name, and in 1968 the cathedral was consecrated in honor of the Virgin Mary's patriarch by Patriarch Joseph Slip.

The construction of the temple was conducted with the money of parishioners, other Ukrainian-speaking residents of Argentina , as well as the fathers of the Greek Catholic Church, and was finally completed in 1969. Today it is the main temple of all the Greek Catholics of Argentina.

Architectural solution and decoration of the temple

The authors of the project of the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos became the architect Victor Grinenko. He, together with the engineer Victor Alatio, supervised the construction of the cathedral. The temple area of ​​485 square meters. m built in the style of Ukrainian baroque with traditional for this style of domes. In this case, their five - the central personifies Jesus Christ, the remaining 4 - the four evangelists. The building has 3 naves.

The facade of the cathedral is decorated with the image of the Intercession of the Virgin, another image of the Virgin Mary - with the infant Jesus in her arms - crowns the apse. The author of the second image is the icon painter Boris Kryukov.

Inside the cathedral is decorated in Byzantine style by the artist Nikolas Kholodiuk. The vault is decorated with the image of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove; The Christ the Pantocrator and the four Evangelists are depicted on the central dome.
