Value of the structure

During the Second World War, Montenegro was occupied by Italian invaders. Fierce fighting took place in the area of the Tara River canyon in Montenegro, through which the Djurdjevic Bridge was transferred. The mountains surrounding the gorge gave an opportunity to carry out partisan outings to the defenders of the country.

Djurdjevic's bridge was the only crossing over the river, so the government decides to destroy it. In 1942 the partisans led by Lazar Yaukovich blew up the central arch of the bridge, the rest of its spans were saved. This event allowed the Italian army to stop in the river area. The invaders soon seized and shot engineer Yaukovich. After the war, a monument was erected at the entrance to the Djurdjevic Bridge in memory of the hero. The very same attraction was restored in 1946.
