Ice Cave

Where is the Ice Cave?

Most of the tourists go to the Balkans to relax by the sea and enjoy the warm Mediterranean climate. And only a few travelers want to know about the visited country as much as possible. They like active rest, and not a quiet pastime by the water. Of course, such people know that the Ice Cave in Montenegro is perhaps the most important sight of the mountainous region.

The ice cave, a photo of which can be seen below, should be searched in the Durmitor National Park , more precisely, in the same mountain range. It was discovered and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. Apparently, the Ice Cave near the town of Zabljak was formed due to the melting of glaciers. The cave is located under the mountain. The head is more than 2000 m high and is the most high-altitude landmark of the Balkan Peninsula.

What is so attractive Ice Cave?

It's amazing how in one place both plus and minus temperatures can be simultaneously. Going down to the Ice Cave, this fad of nature can be felt on yourself. But the main thing that is worth seeing here is the crystal stalactites. They hang from the ceiling of the cave, and, dripping, create no less beautiful sculptures - stalagmites. In some places, the age-old icicles reach a size that grows together, and then they are already called stalagnates.

The cave has a length of about 100 m and three levels in height, on which there are numerous ice lakes and galleries, each with its own temperature and humidity. For visits four grottoes are opened - the Giant, the Diamond, the Geographer and the Meteor. The walls of the cave are made of white limestone, like the whole mountain. Against the background of their sparkling transparent icicles look like scenery to the fairy tale of the Snow Queen.

Hardly getting here, travelers can refresh themselves in the coolness of the cave, and if you stay here, then it is quite possible to freeze. The water of crystal purity, flowing from the ceiling, forming small lakes, will quench your thirst.

How to get to the fairy cave?

From the town of Zabljak to the cave is a path traversed by numerous travelers. This path is rather remote and will take at least 5 km in one direction, depending on the training. For fans of mountaineering, it is much shorter, but to go through it, you will need experience and special equipment. The easiest way is to hire a guide.
