Stopping breathing is an extremely dangerous condition, which creates an immediate threat to human life. When breathing is stopped, the brain is not supplied with oxygen, and after 6 minutes, irreversible damage occurs, so first aid should be given immediately.
Why can breathing stop?
Causes of stopping breathing:
- blockage of the respiratory tract by foreign bodies;
- electric shock;
- closing of the lumen of the airways (for example, when the root of the tongue is sinking in a person unconscious);
- drowning;
- poisoning with toxic substances (including drugs);
- traumatic shock ;
- hemorrhage in the brain.
Signs of stopping breathing
The stopping of breathing is determined quite simply by a superficial examination:
- the victim's chest does not rise or fall;
- there are no sounds characteristic of breathing, if you listen;
- bluishness of the lips, tips of the ears, pallor of the skin.
For the final check, you should attach one hand on the side, at the level of the lower ribs, and the second on the stomach of the affected person in the area of the stomach. If this does not feel characteristic of the inspiration of the chest rises, stopping breathing can be considered established and proceed to provide assistance.
What should I do if I stop breathing?
Emergency care for stopping breathing:
- Lay the victim on his back, remove the tight clothes (loosen the tie, unbutton the shirt, etc.).
- Clean the oral cavity of vomit, mucus and other contents that may interfere with breathing. This is done with a napkin, gauze, kerchief or, in their absence, just fingers.
- If the tongue fades into the larynx, it must be pulled out and held with fingers.
- Under the shoulders of the injured person, you need to put a platen so that the head is thrown back and the mouth opens. If the stop of breathing is caused by a trauma, you can not put anything, and resuscitation is carried out without changing the position of the body.
- To comply with hygiene measures for artificial respiration, cover the victim with a handkerchief.
- Take a deep breath, then exhale sharply into the mouth of the victim, while holding his nose. Injection air is produced 1-2
seconds, with a frequency of 12-15 times per minute. - Artificial respiration should be combined with a massage of the heart (after the first exhalation, press down on the chest 5 times) with palms placed on top of each other.
- Checking the pulse and breathing is done every minute, and in the absence of breathing, resuscitation measures continue.
Artificial respiration is carried out by the mouth in the mouth or mouth in the nose, if it is not possible to unclasp the victim's jaw. It is necessary to render assistance before the arrival of an ambulance. If breathing is restored, then check it and the pulse should be every 1-2 minutes, before the arrival of doctors.
