Gallery of Modern Art

The Gallery of Modern Art enjoys great popularity among tourists and is a kind of visiting card of the historic center of the Republic of San Marino . The building of the gallery is located on the slope of Mount Titano , among ancient fortresses and majestic castles. This amazing place is a medieval city, surrounded by fortress walls and bastions.

A bit of history

The gallery began its activity back in 1956, after a successful series of exhibitions at the Biennale in San Marino. About 500 masters took part in the first series of expositions, including the famous artist Mario Penelope. It was thanks to him that the exhibition was attended by a large number of eminent authors, and the famous Italian illustrator Renato Guttuso became even a member of the judicial commission. The exhibition was visited by more than 100 thousand people. After the deafening success of the first series of the exhibition, the exhibition was presented again two years later. The interest of visitors to modern art pushed the creators to the decision to open a permanent exhibition space.

Structure of the gallery

At the moment, more than 750 objects are exhibited in the Gallery of Modern Art. This includes works of art by Italian and foreign masters of the early twentieth century and modernity. The gallery is divided into sections, in which various artistic genres are represented:

All these works are either donated to the gallery, or were bought from their authors. Most of the works exhibited in the main halls of the gallery belong to outstanding artists and sculptors. At the beginning of the 21st century, the policy of the gallery management changed slightly, and a special site was allocated for young contemporary authors. It is located in the former building of the church of St. Anne, where every year a number of small exhibitions take place.

Many artists who were exhibited in the church building, gained great popularity and became famous throughout the world. Among them is Nicoletta Ceccoli and Pier Paolo Gabriele. The works of these masters are now on display in the main halls of the gallery. Especially popular among visitors is the hall of modern photo art. In it you can see the work of Italian amateur photographers, as well as recognized professionals in the world of this genre.

Many connoisseurs of contemporary art come to San Marino to admire the originals of such famous artists as Corrado Cali, Renato Kuttuso and Sandro Chia. In the halls of the gallery there are a lot of famous works all over the world, among them "Angemann's San Marino", "Portrait of Vittorini" by Renato Guttuso and "When Comet" by Montesan.

In 2014 the Gallery of Modern Art in cooperation with the State Museum created a special residency program "San Marino Calling". This program allows young artists from different countries to exchange experiences and improve their skills.
